Legal Sea Foods
New restaurant within Garden City retail center with monumental bar, 2,240 SF restaurant, 1,700 SF kitchen, and 1,560 SF patio. 149 seats overall: 52 indoor, 43 bar, 54 patio seats.
In collaboration with Susan Greco, interior designer, and her conceptual ideas for the space, the team’s design recalls elements of the sea and the nearby Narraganset Bay, created with abstract and evocative wall treatments and visual art. Elements such as a seafoam-inspired custom light fixture above the bar and a large scale model of Rhode Island’s sea floor become focal points in the dining room.
The monumental 43-seat bar – the center of the “watery universe” in the space – anchors a soaring 24’ high ceiling that caps dining space lit by generously sized windows and clerestories. Two glass garage doors can be opened or closed to a smaller-scale patio with folding glass wall, creating an indoor-outdoor dining experience.
Colors are minimal and ethereal – giving a sensation of seeing the world through a filtered water lens. Polished concrete floors, gray tongue and groove paneling, granite and tile finishes create a cool environment. Patterns used in the details of the Cabanas, wallcovering and upholstery are abstract in design and aquatically inspired. The outline of a thin cobalt light is frames a large wall-mounted topographical map depicting the underwater landscape of Narragansett Bay. This cobalt light is used again as an accent to wash the face of the monumental bar. Outside, wood siding and a perforated metal screen in a wave pattern hint at the restaurant experience within.
