To renovate the existing student lounge, consolidate student services and amenities, and improve circulation with the addition of a new entry.
As a result of a master plan completed in 2013 by Sasaki, PCA was tasked with creating a new entry experience from the main campus spine and courtyard — the culmination of a campus boulevard spanning from the gymnasium to the dining hall.
Although modest in square footage at 2,000 SF, the glass entry addition, with its signature stainless steel canopy, makes a dramatic impact on the courtyard. The green slate of the boulevard is carried into the entry, connecting to a realigned walkway and interior spine or “boardwalk” that links all student amenities and provides a clear path to the school’s only dining hall. The full height glass at the entry and new light wells punched into the ceiling clarify circulation, bringing in light from above and views to the campus beyond.
An ingenious blue wave wall at the mess deck entrance provides hanging space for cadet back packs. The corridor’s slate wall provides a backdrop for easily updated graphics that showcase the daily life of a cadet for touring students, new trainees and parents.
PCA’s value added approach capitalized on the revitalization of the ”Razor’s Edge” student lounge to consolidate all student services from various parts of campus, creating the campus’ first true student center.
