Renovation and 2,700 SF expansion of existing 600-seat Mess Deck to add 200 seats and outdoor patio for campus events.
The striking 15’ volume of the Mess Deck addition, lit by a constellation of small aperture lights and four large light fixtures, creates a dramatic setting for cadets gathering for meals on campus. Inside, an open concept servery with multiple staffed stations brings customized fresh food options directly out to the diners.
The Mess Deck entry’s ingenious blue wave wall provides hanging space for cadet back packs. The interior finishes continue the watery theme established at the entry, with blues and greens balanced with the sandy neutrals of wood paneling illuminated with slot lights wrapping the wall. The design retains the existing pixelated wave floor finish, adding nautically themed elements like topographic sea map walls that offer whimsy and interest.
The dining addition and new patio space, located on prime real estate facing the bay, act as a signature piece for the campus. With views of the training ship and the parade grounds used for morning formation, it forms a dramatic background for commencement ceremonies and acts as a lighthouse for the campus, glowing at night at the edge of campus.
