Multi-use 40B residential and retail town center with two new buildings with 130 1- 2- and 3-bedroom apartments, 22,000 SF of first floor retail, parking and open space.
North Square at The Mill District is the proposed third phase of development of the Mill District. As a new multi-use residential and retail town center, North Square will address the community need for more affordable and market rate housing options and bring new energy to the neighborhood, creating an inviting pedestrian experience for Amherst residents and visitors.
Two new buildings with 130 new apartments, 22,000 SF of first floor retail, parking and open space will be sited together to transform the currently dormant site into an attractive town square. The unit mix is planned largely as 1 and 2-bedroom apartments, with 10% designed as 3-bedroom units. 80% will be priced at market rate with 20% reserved for residents earning less than 50% of area median income.
The retail component will include small local shops such as a café, small restaurant, gallery home furnishings, nail salon and specialty clothing store, providing pedestrian-friendly access to open space and site amenities, and to the existing Atkins Market, as well as the proposed public common/square.
The Square formed by these buildings will become a community amenity with landscaping, outdoor seating, and sidewalks, creating a destination for North Amherst. The layout will create an active new space that will enliven the streetscape along Cowls Road.
