Client

Beacon South Station Associates with Stull and Lee Architects, Inc.

Program

Retail development of 40,000 SF ground floor in restored train station, including 9,000 SF food hall

Challenge

Transform a renovated train station through innovative development of its ground floor, respecting its historic status and primary transportation function.

Solution

Create a great meeting place reminiscent of an active, successful urban plaza lined with shops and cafes to serve passengers and nearby office workers alike; combine an urbane design ambiance with respect for historic detailing.

Result

As has South Station itself, the retail concourse has stood the test of time. The retail program won multiple awards and has served as a design example for other transportation centers such as New York City’s Grand Central Station.
