Westfield State University Scanlon Hall
Westfield, MA
With an aging dormitory in need of an accessibility upgrade, Westfield State College turned to PCA to develop a solution. Drawing from a clear understanding of our client’s overall mission, PCA looked beyond the seemingly modest entry program to unlock the building’s potential through a multi-story glass entryway that enriched the residential experience.
Client
Westfield State College
Massachusetts State College Building Authority
Program
Multi-phased renovation, ADA upgrade, and expansion of 103,000 SF existing dorm, including new entry vestibule addition and elevator.
Challenge
Finesse the need for accessibility improvements into an opportunity to establish an entry identity and reclaim lost common spaces.
Solution
Reconfigured accessible paths converge upon a new glass facade that houses a relocated stairwell and allows abundant light into the new entry lobby and upper floor lounges. A new dual entry elevator provides access to all public areas of the building, including offset levels. Future improvements are outlined in a multi-phase plan.
Result
The design enriched the residential experience with new, sun-drenched interior common spaces and repositioned the building as a campus gateway.
